Summer Pull List Cleaning

Avengers-Spiderman Cleaning

Source Hrjoe Photography

With DC launching their new DC You titles and Marvel finally announcing their plans for after Secret Wars I decided to do a little Spring Summer Cleaning of the old Pull List.  To start off, here is what my current Pull List looks like:

Physical Books

  • Wytches
  • Angela: Asgard’s Assassin
  • All-New X-Men
  • Spider-Gwen
  • Jupiter’s Circle
  • Fight Club 2 (LS)
  • Wonder Woman
  • Batman
  • Batgirl
  • Gotham Academy
  • Superman/Wonder Woman
  • Jupiter’s Legacy (LS)

Digital Books

  • Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman
  • Catwoman

*LS indicates it is a limited series and not ongoing

My ultimate goal is to bring this list down to a lean mean 10.  Fight Club 2 is a limited series but is coming out monthly so I consider it a number in my list.  Jupiter’s Legacy is so infrequent that while it is on the list I don’t really consider it a “monthly cost”.

Here are the books I dropped:

Jupiters Circle

  • Wytches
  • Angela: Asgard’s Assassin
  • Jupiter’s Circle
  • Gotham Academy
  • Superman / Wonder Woman

These books aren’t bad but I find my self letting them stack up 3-4 months at a time with no desire to read them.  I may pick them up as a trade later but as for now they are just costing me money.  I never really enjoyed Jupiter’s Circle so it was the easiest book to drop.  Jupiter’s Legacy has come out once so far this year so I feel pretty safe keeping it on my list.  Wytches was ok but I’d rather read it collected 6 issues at a time in a trade rather than go monthly.  Angela: Asgard’s Assassin and Gotham Academy were both pretty good for the first arc but I still lost interest.  Superman / Wonder Woman has been good but it lost a lot of what I liked when they switched artists and it was no longer Tony S. Daniel.

Here are the new books I’m adding:

Physical Books

  • Extraordinary X-Men
  • Uncanny X-Men
  • Old Man Logan

Digital Books

JLA 1 All Covers

  • Justice League: Gods and Monsters
  • Justice League of America

This will have me pulling all of the main X-Men team books with the addition of the Old Man Logan solo book.  I’ve been pulling All-New X-Men for a while now and while I’ve really enjoyed it, have missed out on crucial information by not pulling the other main X-Men Books.  So with all of the Marvel books getting rebooted to number 1 it’s a good time to get in on the ground floor of all three main X-Men books at once.

The only ongoing new DC comic book that I’ll be adding is the new Justice League of America from Bryan Hitch.  I’ve gone through the whole list of new DC books and this new JLA is really the only one that I’m interested in.  I’ll be getting Justice League: Gods and Monsters but it is a limited series and will be ending on July 18th.

DC Comics Green Lantern 75th Anniversary Variant Covers

DC Comics is continuing their monthly theme variants covers this September with a slew of covers honoring the 75th Anniversary of Green Lantern.  I’ve got the complete collection below.

How to Enjoy San Diego Comic-Con From Home

Little Mermaid 2

This weekend is Nerd Christmas which sometimes goes by the name of San Diego Comic-Con.  If you were one of the lucky people who planned way ahead and were able to buy tickets, then you are there right now and basking it all it’s glory.  But if you are like me then you are at home, seething in jealousy, feverishly refreshing comic book resources for any morsel of news.

Well just because we can’t be there doesn’t mean we can’t reap some of the glory without even leaving our house!

One of the things I get most jealous about missing out on is the legendary Comic Con Exclusives.  The last couple of weeks I’ve been watching as every retailer announce their exclusives with the knowledge that the only way I’ll get a chance at them is paying 2 to 3 times face value on ebay.  Well not this year!

This year you can actually buy some of the San Diego Comic-Con exclusives from Hot Topic and Barnes and Noble, online, for face value!

Hot Topic

Hot Topic has a pretty amazing selection of Comic-Con Exclusive Funko POP Vinyl figures and T-Shirts.  They have a Metallic C-3PO, Dr. Who 11th Doctor, Castiel from Supernatural, Golden Frieza from Dragonball Z, Helena from Orphan Black, Twisty from American Horror Story, Golden Bender from Futurama, A special Minion, Sadness from Inside Out, and a X-Force version of Deadpool’s Chimichanga Truck. You can check them all out here.  Here are some of my personal favorites.

Deathstroke Unmasked

Deathstroke Unmasked

Heisenberg

Heisenberg

Rocket with Potted Groot (My Personal Favorite)

Rocket and Potted Groot

Barnes and Noble

Barnes and Noble has a selection of different Funko Figures and Pop Vinyls along with a few statues.  The Pop Vinyls include a black Ant-Man, Dr. Who Dalek, Joy from Inside Out, Captain America from Age of Ultron without his helmet on, and Star Wars K3PO (a white C3PO).  There also have a couple of action figures and more Funko items as well.  You can see the full list here.  My personal favorite is the Catwoman Statue from Batman the Animated Series.

SDCC 2015 Batman Animated Catwoman Bust

Catwoman Bust

Comic Books

What if you aren’t interested in buying toys or Funko Pop Vinyls?  It seems unlikely but it might true.  Well you can still appreciate San Diego Comic-Con by getting a lot of digital comics for real cheap!  Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse are all having big sales all weekend long on Comixology.

  • Deadpool: Dracula’s Gauntlet

Dark Horse

Dark Horse (new to comixology) is having a line wide sale.  It is a little too much for me to put all of it in here but basically every graphic novel is on sale and the prices vary.  You can check out all of it here.

All of these comics are also price matched on Amazon and can be bought there for the sale price as well.

Digital Exclusive Variant Covers

Comixology Exclusive Covers

Comixology is also selling six different exclusive variant covers only during the duration of Comic Con.  I’ve never seen a digital exclusive variant cover before but it seems like a cool idea.  You can get them here.  Comixology will be released one each day, and you can check them all out below.

Comic Block June 2015 Unboxing

Comic Block Web Clipping

A new month and a new Comic Block!  I guess if I do more than one of these unboxings I’m going to convince myself I need to do them every month.  The slightly odd thing about these Comic Blocks is that because they ship at the end of the month you don’t actually get June’s box until July so the month constantly seems off.  It’s not that big of a deal I just don’t want the internets to feel I waited a whole month to post this, the box just came in the mail this week.

First lets look at the full box and all it’s glory

Comic Block June - Full Unboxing

Here is the full rundown of items in the June Comic Block:

  • Groot #1 Exclusive Comic Block Variant Cover
  • Ghostbusters Get Real #1 Exclusive Comic Block Variant Cover
  • 21st Century Tank Girl #1 Exclusive Comic Block Variant Cover
  • BVS. T-Shirt from ShirtPunch
  • Avengers Pen and Note Pad

Here is a look at the insert that comes in that box that explains all the items.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This month every comic book was an exclusive Variant cover instead of 2 out of 3 from the May Comic Block which is awesome.  Still no sign of the elusive trade paper back that we were promised would be in some of the boxes, so perhaps next month?  The overall quality of comic books remains very high.  The issue of Groot and 21st Century Tank Girl justify the purchase price of the box alone in my opinion (sorry Ghostbusters).  It looks like the trend will be that all the comic books are number 1 issues of new ongoing series which is awesome.  They are trying to get people on board new series rather than handing out random overstock back issues.  We’ll start by taking a look at the non Comic Book items in the box.  This month had a cool Batman vs. Superman T-Shirt which I like a lot more than I did last month’s Comic Book Guy T-Shirt.  The box also came with a Avengers Pen and note pad which looks like something you’d find on the shelf at Wal-Mart or Target and is pretty meh.  I would have rather they included an art print like they did last month then have something so generic as this pen.

Last month I posted my unboxing before I actually read the books so I thought it might be better this month if I read them first and wrote a little blurb about each one.

Groot #1

Comic Block June - Groot 1

As Rocket famously stated, Groot “Don’t know talkin’ good…, so his vocabulistics is limited to “I” and “am” and “Groot,” exclusively in that order”.  So when Marvel announced they were going to release a Groot solo ongoing series I was curious how it would turn out.  While this may be a Groot solo series, Rocket is just as much a star and does the heavy lifting in the speech department.  However, the end of this issue makes me think that Rocket and Groot won’t actually be with each other going forward like they were in this issue.

This comic was great.  It had the humor and wit that the Guardians of the Galaxy Film brought and was a joy to read cover to cover.  I’m still not sure I’m going to pick up Groot as an ongoing series but I will definitely be keeping an eye out for it to start appearing on Marvel Comics Digital Unlimited.  My favorite part though had to be this little reference to Man of Steel.

21st Century Tank Girl #1

Comic Block June - Tank Girl 1

This is actually the book I was most exciting about.  I don’t know much about Tank Girl so it was pretty sweet to find an issue in this month’s box.  This issue (and series I’m assuming) is an anthology issue so it had 4 different stories with various writers and artists in it.  All the stories were funny, raunchy, and violent.  I don’t know if I will add this to my pull list but if future issues are in this anthology format this it will be good to know I can pick them up later and not be lost.

Ghostbusters Get Real #1

Comic Block June - Ghostbusters Get Real 1

This is the comic that I was least excited about in the whole bunch.  In general I am pretty weary of comic books that are based off of TV Shows or Movies.  I’m sure that there are plenty of good books out there but it just isn’t my cup of tea.  That being said this comic was ok.  I’m not going to buy more of the series, but I enjoyed the issue well enough.  The plot is that the elder God Proteus attacks the Real Ghostbusters (from the 90’s cartoon) causing them to go into the universe of the regular Ghostbusters.

I am vaguely aware that the Real Ghostbusters existed and that it is different from the normal Ghostbusters so I was able to understand that part.  They give you all the information you need anyway so even if you aren’t familiar with the intricacies of Ghostbusters you would be able to follow along.

The target audience for this book is for children around 8 to 12 so if you got a kid that is into Ghostbusters this might be a good pick for them.

Full disclosure I was not paid for this post and bought this comic block with my own money.  I am doing this unboxing for my own entertainment, however, if the people at nerd block wanted to give me free things I would love to take them and review them here.

Justice League: Gods and Monsters

Justice League Gods and Monsters Deluxe

The next DC Comics Original Animated Movie is coming out on July 28th and will be a little different than the usual fanfare.  Instead of being a movie based on classic story arc from the comic books, this film will be a completely original property from Bruce Timm (the man who created the look of Batman: The Animated Series from the 90’s).  This will be an Elseworlds story that will be taking a radically different approach to the Justice League we know and love.

Justice League Gods and Monsters

In this world Batman is not Bruce Wayne but actually Kirk Langstorm (Man-Bat) and is a Vampire.  Superman is still the last son of Krypton but no longer the son of Jor-El.  In this world Superman is instead the son of General Zod.  Wonder Woman isn’t an Amazon in this world but one of Jack Kirby’s New Gods named Bekka.

Not only will there be a new movie but there will be a slew of other material as well.  First, there is a 3 part web series by Machinama, which you can watch below.  DC has already announced will be a second season in early 2016 featuring 10 additional episodes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOWLqnjFN64

There will also be a line of action figures.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

And lastly, a daily digital-first comic book.  The series will debut digitally on July 1st and release 18 issues daily ending on July 18th.  This series will be a prequel that will dig into the origins of the Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman of this new universe (source).  You can the first part featuring Batman here on comiXology.

I am planning on going all in and buying the movie along with getting all the issues of the digital-first comic series.  It is no secret that I love a good Elseworlds story so this whole thing is right up my ally.

Mystery Comic 6 and 7

Mystery Comic 6: Hammer of God: Sword of Justice Issue 2 of 2

Comic (6)

This book is terrible. It is the second issue of a two issue arc and I’m not going to pretend I bothered trying to read the back up that explained what happened to this point.  This book is chock full of the things I hate about Science Fiction writing the most.  It goes out of its way at times to try to create a its own futurist system of slang only to abandon it just as quickly and use slang of the time that is all ready dated.

The story is based around a monkey / human hybrid called the Hammer.  I don’t really know why he’s important or care enough to find out.  The first half is spent talking about how Hammer (the monkey guy) is coming and they need to prepare, and the second half is him attacking this Brain ship.  He eventually defeats the brain ship which has a whole city inside it and they re-purpose it for themselves.  Is it the end? I don’t really care.

I don’t really have much to say about this book.  It’s by far the worst book I’ve read so far out of these mystery comics.  There weren’t really even any funny ads.  I went back and forth if I should scan more pictures of the inside but nothing was crazy enough or good enough it seemed it deserved it.

Mystery Comic 7: Squalor Issue 4 of 4

Comic (7)

Wow.  I thought Hammer was a terrible book but Squalor is unreadable.  I would sum things up but I honestly have no idea what was going on.  This is part 4 of a 4 part story but still, I couldn’t even get a glimpse of what the plot was suppose to be.  Here is a sample of what the comic is like.

Squalor

Every page is like this.  It mostly takes place in this dream world which the characters just speak in non-sense.  When it does cut to the real world it makes even less sense.  I have nothing else to say, so far Squalor is the clear front runner for the worst comic in this entire batch.

DC Comics 1994 Elseworlds Annuals

Elseworld's Finest Vol 1 2

Since I put this site together my first instinct was to review/talk about the new comics I get each week.  However, these posts take me a while to put together and really the quickest I could get something out would be 2-3 days after the comic was released, which is approximately 7 years in internet terms.  So by the time I got my review out there would already be hundreds of professional and amateur sites that do just that. Frankly I don’t know if my opinion on new comics is that unique that I need to throw in my two cents.

That being said this is my website so I will write about whatever I want to, which may include reviews of new comics from time to time (YOU’RE NOT MY SUPERVISOR!).  But for the most part I focus my reviews on older more obscure stuff I like from the 90’s.

I’m a child of the 90’s and while I didn’t really read comic books much back then, the big boom comics of the early 90’s were the color pallet of my childhood.  Things like Batman the Animated Series, the X-Men cartoon, pogs, and Crystal Pepsi were my jam.  This actually works out great for me at this age in life because the comics I am most interested in collecting (stuff from the early 90’s) is literally some of the least valuable comics available and super easy to find.

So one of the things I love in Comic Books (besides early 90’s X-Men) is Elseworlds stories (What if… stories if you’re nasty).  I really enjoy getting new takes on well known characters that put them in situations I would have never dreamed of (Superman Red Son is easily one of my favorite series of all time).

What makes Elseworld stories so great you ask?  Well a couple of things.  First, Elseworlds stories are self-contained and a lot of times appear only as one issue comics.  You get a short, but complete story, which is given to you in a self-contained universe.  Second, because these are non-canon stories anything can happen.  Major villains and heroes can die so the stakes are a lot higher.

This is the list of 1994 Annuals that I was able to buy

  • The Adventures of Superman 6 “The Super Seven Part I: The Longest Night”
  • Batman 18 “Black Masterpiece”
  • Batman: Shadow of the Bat 2 “The Tyrant”
  • Catwoman 1 “The Last Man”
  • Detective Comics 7 “Leatherwing”
  • Green Lantern 3 “Ring of Evil”
  • Justice League International 5 “No Rules to Follow”
  • Justice League of America 8 “The Once and Future League”
  • Legends of the Dark Knight 4 “Citizen Wayne”
  • Lobo 2 “Western”
  • Robin 3 “The Narrow Path”
  • Steel 1 “Crucible of Freedom”
  • Superboy 1 “The Super Seven Part II: The Men of Steel”
  • Superman 6 “The Feral Man of Steel”
  • Team Titans 2 “Into the Light”

I only have 15 of the 23 so I am missing 8 but honestly the rest of the list is pretty obscure (L.E.G.I.O.N., Legionnaires, Legion of Super-heroes etc.) so even with my OCD completionist mindset I’m fine not having all of them (though if I see it I’ll pick up Action Comics Annual 6).  I’m still a little amazed I was able to find the 15 that I did find at once.  I was able to get all of these at Houston Comic-Con (Comicpalooza) over Memorial Day weekend.  At first I had only found three (Batman, Detective Comics, and Superman) and was checking out when the stall owner said he had a bundled a few together which contained 12 more.

So my plan is to treat this like I do my Mystery Comics and periodically review these from time to time as I read them.  So be on the look out! This is just the start of more to come!

DC Comics Plans After Convergence

Screenshot_2015-06-09-20-12-58

DC Comics plans for what is going to happen after Convergence are finally becoming clear.  It looks like they are doing some major housecleaning and not resetting numbers across the line.  Staple books like Batman, Superman, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, etc. aren’t renumbering to 1 and will continue with their “New 52” numbering (all are at issue 41 right now).

Overall there will be 25 comics that were being released before convergence that will continue being ongoing series and not being renumbered to number 1.

  • Constantine: The Hellblazer by Ming Doyle and Riley Rossmo

This isn’t the first time DC has cleaned house.  DC has had sweeping line changes since the launch of the New 52 back in 2011.  Every 6 months they have fairly consistently ended series and added new ones in.

The biggest difference in this change that I can see is that DC won’t be calling their line the “New 52” anymore, which make sense since the “New 52” is now 4 years old. The DC Comics line of books will now be called “DC You”.

New number 1 issues always sell a lot and make for easy jumping on points so the big two (Marvel and DC) renumber series on the regular when series take new creative directions.  DC seems to have held off on this more than Marvel lately.  We saw this when there was sea change in creative for Batgirl and Wonder Woman and DC continued with the “New 52” numbering rather than go reverting to number 1. DC has also (so far) kept to the “New 52” numbering without reverting back to the old numbering, even for major anniversary issues. Issue 19 of Detective Comics would have been issue 900 in the old numbering. DC still made this a special oversize anthology issue but actually kept the issue number of 19 and resisted renumbering the issue to 900.

I’ve been a big fan of the “New 52” so while I’m sad to see the name go, it looks like DC isn’t rebooting everything and this is just a shake up of things. The new books in this shake up aren’t all that interesting to me. So far the only book I’m planning on buying is Bryan Hitch’s Justice League of America, but we shall see.

Arkham Knight: Complete Pre-Order DLC Rundown

Batman Arkham Knight Cover Art

When the PS4 and Xbox One were announced I decided that come hell or high water that I would wait to buy one the new consoles until a game I really wanted was released.  Almost a year after their launch there has only been one game that has had the pull to push me into the next generation of consoles and it’s been Arkham Knight.

Batman Arkham Asylum

I’ve played all of the Arkham games since the release of Arkham Asylum back in 2009 and its been one of my favorite games series of all time.  I loved it’s follow up Arkham City and even really enjoyed the non-Rocksteady Studios release Arkham Origins.  I even played the Playstation Vita Version of Arkham Origins, Arkham Origins: Blackgate.  So you can bet your sweet ass that if there is a new Arkham game now or in the future I’m going to be buying it, and whatever console I need to play it.

I love me some Arkham but for the release of Arkham Knight the powers to be are doing something that absolutely drives me insane.  That is retailer exclusive pre-order DLC bonuses.  When I get Arkham Knight I am going to play the absolute shit out of this game.  I will complete all of the bonus missions, I will find all the Riddler trophies, I will buy all of the DLC.  However, because of these retailer exclusive pre-order DLC’s I have a Sophie’s Choice to make wading through this mindfield and figure out which store has the best deal.

The Arkham games have had pre-order DLC bonus’s in the past but they have never been story missions.  Arkham City had some challenge maps and character skins that didn’t really effect game play.  This time around we have actual story missions that will be included which makes picking a store to buy it from much more difficult.  In the past these they have eventually released these pre-order DLC as normal DLC but no mention has been made yet of when this will happen and what the cost will be.  I’d like to think it will be included in the 40 dollar season pass but I won’t hold my breath…

So let’s run down the various stores and pre-order DLC bonuses you can get.

Arkham Knight - Harley Quinn

First no matter where you pre-order from you will get the playable Harley Quinn Story Missions.  I’m assuming that this is similar to the playable Catwoman DLC from Arkham City and that it will continue to be included with the game after the pre-order window as long as you are buying the game new (although this is not confirmed so better safe than sorry).

Amazon

Amazon has a few options here. First they have two collector’s editions that were going for 100 dollars (they are no longer available to buy).

Arkham Knight - Amazon Batmobile

The first collector’s edition had a model replica of the Arkham Knight Batmobile.  It also comes with a steel book game case, art book, exclusive 0 issue of the Arkham Knight Comic Book, along with three “New 52” Character skins.

Arkham Knight - Amazon Statue

The second collector’s edition also cost 100 dollar and had a statue of Batman (also no longer available).  It also came with the other collector’s edition material such as steel book game case, art book, exclusive 0 issue of the Arkham Knight Comic Book, along with three “New 52” Character skins.

Arkham Knight - Book Edition

Next they have a Arkham Asylum bundle which for 10 dollars extra (70 dollars total) you get the game and a copy of the 25th anniversary edition of the graphic novel Arkham Asylum by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean.  You also get a bonus first appearance of Batman (Detective Comics 27) character skin.

Arkham Knight - Amazon Regular

Lastly they have the normal version of the game which comes with the Batman first appearance character skin.

Best Buy

Arkham Knight - Best Buy

Best Buy offers the Wayne Tech Booster pack which gives you four in game upgrades to your weapons and Batmobile.  These are Explosive Gel Takedown, Aerial Juggle, Batarang while gliding, and Batmobile weapon upgrade.

This might be the weakest Pre-order DLC bonus pack, I can’t imagine you won’t be able to just get all of these upgrades through normal game play.

Wal-Mart

Arkham Knight - Walmarrt

Walmart offers a Prototype Batmobile skin along with 5 dollars credit to their movie service Vudu.

Gamestop

Arkham Knight - Gamestop

Gamestop offers a story mission featuring the Red Hood (aka Jason Todd).  This might be the best bonus of the whole group seeing as most of the other bonuses involve skins and not additional gameplay content.

Steam

Arkham Knight - Steam

Steam is offering Batman character skins with a Dark Knight Returns version of Batman along with a Batman Beyond version.  I am for sure getting the game on Playstation 4 so Steam was never really in my cards as an option.

Arkham Knight - PS4 Exclusives

Regardless where you buy the game from, if you get it on PlayStation 4 you get you get Scarecrow Nightmare missions along with Batman 3000 and Batman ’66 character skins along with a Batman ’66 Batmobile skin. This sucks for Xbox One owners but frankly isn’t that surprising.  Playstation has been getting exclusive DLC going all the way back to the original Arkham Asylum.

jerry final thought

So after much thought and deliberation I went with Gamestop to get the Red Hood story mission.  I’d honestly much rather get the Arkham Asylum graphic novel bundle from amazon since 10 dollars is a good price for the book and I don’t own it already. But if it’s between a book and more gameplay I have to choose more gameplay.  The struggle is real, the struggle is real.
