Top 8 Cat Moments in Comic Books

Number 8: Catwoman Vol. 3 Issue 1

I probably could have put together an entire list of just Cat moments in Catwoman (and still might) so I decided to just pick one.  I picked the first issue of Catwoman in Vol. 3 because it occurs in the first few pages of the book and sets the tone for the series.  In 2011 DC Comics rebooted every comic book they had with new artist and writers back to issue 1.

This was a big moment for comic books.  It served as an introduction to comic books to a whole new set of fans who have never read a comic book before.  Therefore it is important that the books made a good first impression right away.  This opening scene set the mood for the whole series and this did a great job.  It’s Catwoman working on the fly, her door is getting knocked down and she’s grabbing what she can to make an escape.  It’s a fun scene and is just a taste of the shenanigans to come.

Number 7: Batman Issue 406 (Batman Year One)

This is basically another Catwoman moment, but it could be seen as the first Catwoman moment!  There is a suspenseful moment in the Batman Year One story where Batman is pinned down by cops and a cat gives away his position.  They start shooting and Batman could have just left the cat behind but he scoops the cat up on his way out and gets it out of the building to safety.

It’s one of my favorite moments in the story, not just because Batman saves the cat from certain death but because it also establishes a good relationship between Catwoman and Batman.

Number 6: Supergirl Vol. 5 Issue 14

So there is a bunch of Superpets.  If you are aware of any of them (which you probably aren’t) you probably are aware of Krypto the Superdog.  But there is clearly one pet that is the best and that is Supergirl’s pet cat Streaky, the Supercat.  I’ll have a future blog post devoted just to Streaky but I picked this issue because it is a different non-super version of Streaky.  In this version Streaky gets his name from completely non-super power related reasons…

Number 5: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina 1

Every one needs a sidekick, from Batman and Robin to Tango and Cash, every one just works better in pairs.  So our number five selection is Sabrina the teenage witches’ side kick Salem.  I’m not super familiar with all things Sabrina so it’s nice they added a little info comic in the back up to explain things.

Salem serves as Sabrina’s voice of reason and occasional wit and humor.  Now lets hope they eventually release issue 2!

Number 4: Wonder Woman 600

As these types of anniversary issues tend to be Wonder Woman 600 is an anthology issue which includes several stories from various writers and artists who have had an important runs in Wonder Woman history.  Part of this included a story drawn by Amanda Conner in which Wonder Woman and Power Girl have a heart to heart over a cat.  It’s not specifically said that this cat is streaky… but… its Streaky.

Number 3: Wednesday Comics

Wednesday Comics was a weekly anthology comic book that came out in 2009 and lasted for 12 issues.  It featured short 1 page stories featuring various takes on DC characters from different writers and artists.  Throughout it’s run Amanda Conner did a few Supergirl stories and most of them featured Streaky.  I tried to find as many as I could but this series isn’t digital yet so I found as many as I could.

Number 2: Saga Chapter 14

If you aren’t reading Saga right now go ahead and close this out and start reading it right meow.  It is not only the best comic that is coming out monthly right now but could very well be one of the greatest comics of all time.  That is pretty high praise so with that I will say that the following page from chapter 14 is my favorite moment of the entire series (so far).  Lying cat is a character that has been around from the beginning of the series.  He (she possibly?) is the side kick of an assassin named “The Will”.  This particular assassin has been given the bounty of taking out our main characters so he is a bad guy but has managed to win our hearts over.  Lets just hope he never does actually kill our main characters…

Lying Cat has the ability of being able to tell if any one is telling the truth.  If they are being honest Lying cat says nothing, but if a person is lying, Lying Cat will say “lying”.

The back story of this scene is that The Will went to a pleasure planet called Sextillion for some carnal pleasures.  When he asked for a woman of the night he was presented with this 6 year old slave girl.  The Will did not approve and killed this girls pimp and took her off planet to protect her.  This scene takes place after their escape.  It’s touching, its simple, its why this series continues to be amazing.

Saga - 1

The Sandman is arguably one of the greatest series of all time, read any best of comics list and you are sure to find Sandman firmly in the top 5.  This story is a one shot story that takes place in issue 18 titled “Dream of a Thousand Cats”.  This story is a sad one about a cat who lost her kittens due to some human cruelty.  I really don’t like that part, it almost spoils the entire story for me but the rest of the story is so unique and interesting that I still enjoy it.

Apparently a long time ago cats were the dominate speices on the planet and people were their subjects.  The humans band together and a group of a thousand dreamed the same dream and were able to change cats in to smaller subordinate animals.  Our main cat in this story seeks out Dream (the Sandman) who tells her if she can get a thousand cats to dream together they can change the world and turn things back.  Our main cat goes from place to place to tell her tale and gather enough cats to dream together.  However cats are independent and skeptical of her tale and dismiss it as myth.

Like I said before the cat violence part really turns me off of the story but there is a lot to like in this story.  Neil Gaimen does a great job of getting to the essence of what it is to be a cat.  Their intelligence, their independence, their inquisitive nature.  It’s a great story and really nothing like anything thing else I’ve read in the series.

Bonus Cats! Green Lantern 55

Strap in kids because this one is going to hit you right in the feels.  The Red Lanterns symbolize the emotion of rage.  Initially at least they could not talk and could only scream and puke blood.  So of course they got their own series during the re-launch of the new 52…

Any who this was the knowledge I had of them so I was never terribly interested in reading them.  I was aware that there was a Cat that was part of their team named Dex-Starr but little else.  I did not know that this cat was given and origin story and that it was heartbreaking.

Movie Reading Guide: Avengers – Age of Ultron

We are still a couple months away from the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron and the third trailer just dropped last week (see it here) and you may be asking your self, what the hell is an Ultron?  Why does Kick-Ass have white hair?  What was that pink thing at the end?  Well fear not true believers, I’ve put together a list of required reading so when May comes along you’ll have the privilege of being able to freak out at the post credits scene while every one else is confused.

Let’s go back to the simpler days of 2002.  Nelly’s Hot in Herre was number one on the charts, we had just crowned our first American Idol and Marvel launch its ultimate line of comics.  The Ultimate line of comics had two purposes.  The first was to give writers a chance to work with their favorite characters without the burden of 70 years of canon.  Some characters like Spider-man started back from square one and got a new and updated origin story.  Others like the X-men got face lifts and had major changes made to its canon.  The idea was that this new universe would allow for writers to tell interesting stories without screwing up the main marvel canon while at the same time giving the stories weight.  If a character died in the ultimate universe they really died, they may not ever come back like they might in the main marvel universe.  So the second goal was to create stories that would make good transitions to film or TV.  Mark Millar had this in mind when he wrote the Ultimates and wrote the book with TV and film in mind.  While neither of these story arcs are going to be about Ultron they will give you a good foundation of who the avengers are and serve as a introduction to characters we haven’t met yet.  The books are very accessible and don’t require prior knowledge to read.  While the stories are ridiculous and over the top they are grounded and take place in a more realistic world than normal marvel universe.

There is a third volume, Ultimates 3, but I don’t suggest that.  These two tell a pretty complete story and again, a little over the top, but will give you a good foundation of marvel.

Age of Ultron by Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch

I know this one seems like a no brainer and should be the first thing on the list, I mean this literally has the title of the movie in its name.  The problem is that while Age of Ultron is a good story there is actually not a ton of Ultron stuff in it.  Are you scratching your head in confusion?  The story takes place in an alternative future where Ultron has all ready taken over the planet.  The remains of the marvel heroes send Wolverine back in time in order to kill Hank Pym in order to prevent him from creating Ultron in the first place.  Most of the story takes place in the past before Ultron is created and really centered around the ethics of committing a murder in order to save millions.  Again its a good read but will have nothing to do with the actual movie coming out this summer.

The Avengers 54-58: First Appearance of Ultron by Roy Thomas and John Buscema

This is the first story with Ultron.  I wouldn’t really bother, its from the 60’s and is confusing mess.  It seems counter intuitive that you would want to skip the origin comic of a character but with these characters being around since the 60’s they are fairly irrelevant at this point.

The Mighty Avengers 1-6 – The Ultron Initiative by Brian Michael Bendis and Frank Cho

This story is definitely a lot newer and while its still a little complicated will be a better read.  There is a lot of Ultron in this story but Ultron appears as a half woman half robot hybrid this time around.

Annihilation: Conquest By Various Authors and Artists

This story is sort of a sequel to the Ultron Initiative and involves the cosmic characters of the Marvel universe instead of our typical crew of Avengers.  I’d generally not suggest this since the cosmic characters go pretty deep in the line up of known characters but with Groot being a first name character for kids across the country I full support this book to read now.

Avengers 19-22 Ultron Unlimited – by Kurt Busiek and George Perez

This is an older comic but generally considered the best Ultron story there is.  Ultron is a real threat in this story line and poses a real challenge for the Avengers.  Not only that but there is a lot of collateral damage and will likely be on par with the scale we’ll see in Age of Ultron this summer.  The art is great, George Perez is a legend, however it is a little 80’s.

There’s no Ultron in this book but you are going to need to read this book any way for Phase 3 so you mine as well start now.  The after credits scene in Avengers Age of Ultron can be over several things.  It can be a clue to Ant Man which will come later this year or possibly a lead up to Captain America 3: Civil War.  But if I were a betting man I would guess the teaser will be for the entire Phase 3 which will center around Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet.

Where to Get These Books?

If you want to read any of these books there are a few options, you can go to your local comic book store or book store and they are likely to have some, however this option will likely be fairly expensive.  Use the Comic Book Shop Finder to find the closest shop to you (click here).

Second you can buy any of these on Comixology (click here) digitally which will cost some what less and the most convenient.  The best part about Comixology is they are constantly having sales so if you keep an eye out you can get some of these books on the cheap.  Marvel has sales every Monday and Friday and will periodically have sales in between.

You can get a subscription to Marvel Comics Unlimited (click here) which has all of these books and costs 60 dollars for a years subscription or 10 dollars a month (you can cancel whenever you want).

Last and cheapest would be to go to your local library and check out the books.  Libraries are getting hip these days and might have some of the more popular books on hand, however you may need to ask to see if they can special order some of the more obscure books.

Spider-Gwen

The first issue of Spider-Gwen finally came out as part of its own new on going series this past Wednesday.  Now you might remember Spider-Gwen from her first appearance in Edge of Spider-verse 2.

Let’s back it up a little further.  Over the last couple of months there has been a spider-line wide crossover event at Marvel called Spider-verse.  The core series of Spider-verse takes place in Amazing Spider-man Issues 9-15, however it spans across every spider-man related book that is out right now in Marvel (Superior Spider-Man, Spider-man 2099, Scarlet Spiders, Spider-verse Team Up, Spider-woman, Spider-verse, Edge of Spider-verse).  I think

I’ll write a separate blog post just about the Spider-verse but the long and short of it is the Inheritors are killing Spider-men across every parallel universe and in order to stop them a team of Spider-men from across the multiverse team up.  So because this event involves many different versions of Spider-man Marvel released a five part series to re-introduce and in some cases introduce for the first time, some different versions of Spider-man.

Issue 2 of the Spider-verse introduced the world to Spider-Gwen.  It’s been the break out issue of the series.  As of right now it is entering it’s fifth print run and on Ebay 1st print run issues of Edge of Spider-verse 2 are going for as much as $150.  So it was no surprise that Marvel decided to spin out a on going series based on Spider-Gwen.  The series is written by Jason Latour with art by Robbi Rodriguez, who were the team that wrote and drew the Edge of Spider-verse issue 2.  So before we talk about Spider-Gwen let’s catch up, and they even provide us with a foundation of her on the first page of Edge of Spider-verse 2.

So in this universe our Spider-gwen is thought to be responsible for the death of Peter Parker.  She is actually thought of as a villain, all though she is actively helping people out.  Because of this Kingpin sent out a goon to help recruit Gwen to join his forces.  A fight ensued and Gwen was forced to reveal her Identity to her dad.

The Mary Janes

Not only does this world’s Gwen have spider powers but she is also in a rock band “The Mary Janes” which has a hit single “Face it Tiger”, which is the most adorable thing ever.  The first issue of Spider-Gwen picks up right where Edge of Spider-verse 2 left off.  Gwen is trying to prove to her New York that she is a hero not a villain while trying to balance life as a teenager.  The art is fantastic and makes a lot of use of the secondary color pallet.  The sound description words have a cool stylization and make the pages really pop.  We get a lot of interesting stories threads in this issue, we get the one going struggle with Gwen and her dad, the infighting between Gwen and the band, a new threat of the Vulture, and ongoing thread of the King Pin.  The first issue was really fantastic and keeps the spirit of what they started in Edge of Spider-verse 2 and the lightness and fun that makes Spider-man such an enjoyable character.  Spider-Gwen is on my pull list and I can’t wait to get the next issue.  If you would like to buy a copy go to your local comic book shop (soon it’ll sell out) or pick it up here at Comixology.

As a little added bonus I tracked down all the variant covers I could find.  I’m still finding variant issues as there were a lot of retailer specific ones out there I didn’t know about.  I’ll update this as I find them.

Marvel, All-New X-Men Annual is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Apple vs. Android, Vampires vs. Werewolves, no matter how arbitrary it seems like we are all ways picking a side. Generally when I met fellow comic book nerds this is one of the first things that comes up is which do you like DC or Marvel? For the sake of argument I generally just say DC but the truth is I like both and the argument that one if better than the other is dumb. I say thing because I’ve written a lot about DC in past posts and I don’t want this to seem like I’m just an exclusive DC fanboy. I have Marvel and DC books on my pull list and go see every comic book movie that comes out regardless of which company puts them out. The rest of this post is going to be talking a lot of shit about Marvel but before I want to say some good things. I really do like All-New X-Men and it’s one of my favorite books to come out each month. I also regularly Read X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, Guardians of the Galaxy, and will start reading the monthly Spider-Gwen when it comes out. I think Marvel has been really smart to release digital copies of books with their books. I really appreciate it and it actually is a big selling point for me. I wind up picking up a lot of Marvel books I might not have just because I know I get a digital copy with it.

Ok niceties over. So as I said above All-New X-Men is on my pull list for my local comic book shop. It had been coming out pretty consistently bi-monthly but took a bit of a break in November so I was pretty happy when it came back in December. I was even more excited when I saw there was an Annual come out only a week later! I start immediately reading the book and am completely lost and confused. I do not know who Eva Bell is, she is not a part of the All-New X-Men team, hasn’t showed up in a single issue, and is lost in time and space for some unexplained reason. If you were only subscribed to All-New X-Men you would have just wasted 5 bucks on a book that is utter non-sense.

Here was my process of figuring out what was going on.

I read Uncanny X-Men through the Marvel Unlimited app so I have an idea about what is going on in that book but I’m 6 months behind. So I at least am ahead of the curve in that I know who Eva Bell is, but I don’t know why she stuck in time or what is going on. My first clue was when I redeemed my digital copy of the book on Comixology and happen to see the description say “the secret life of Eva Bell Part 2”. Ah, there is a part 1. I searched Comixology and found that part 1 was in Uncanny X-Men Annual.

Ok so I picked up that issue as well. It still starts off in the middle of the action again so I figure I missed something in Uncanny X-men that explains why Eva Bell is stuck out of time. So I read the front matter of the book (which I never do) and this is the explanation.

Ok so I did miss something. I go back in my marvel unlimited app and can’t find an incident where Eva disappeared and came back aged 7 years. It is either in one of the recent six issues or I missed it. I google what issue it is and figure out they are talking about Uncanny X-Men issue 17.  Here is Eva Bell from Uncanny X-Men 17.

This is good, it is in the Marvel Unlimited app so I can read it for free. I re-read the issue and it does take place in the Danger Room but said incident of Eva Disappearing does not occur. I even skim through the next couple of issues and Eva Bell is in them but no mention of her aging 7 years.  I did find this from Uncanny X-Men issue 19, which is vague but the best I think we’ll get for an explanation.

At this point I just accept that this is the best I’m going to get and move on and read both the Uncanny X-Men and All-New X-men Annual.

So just to recap here is what I needed to do to understand the All-New X-Men Annual:

  • Read issues 1-2 of Uncanny X-Men for the introduction of Eva Bell
  • Read issue 17 of Uncanny X-Men to see when the Danger Room incident occurred
  • Ready Uncanny X-Men Annual 1

This is what frustrates me about Marvel comics. It’s a complete God Damn mess. You cannot just read one series and get a cohesive story. You really need to read All-New X-men, X-Men, and Uncanny X-men to get a coherent story. This isn’t just an X-Men problem. Angela joined the Guardians of the Galaxy but left for Asgard in a Thor comic with no explanation back in Guardians. One day she just wasn’t there anymore. Venom then joined the Guardians of the Galaxy but not in the series but in the Free Comic Book Day issue which came out after he was walking around with them in Guardians Issue 14.

This isn’t even to mention the constant barrage of even tie in issues.

Tie in issues aren’t exclusive to Marvel. As a reader of Batman there have been tie ins across most of the bat family books for every major event. The difference is that they are done in a way where they have been one shot stories and they give you all the information you need within the series to understand what is going on. When Batgirl had a Court of the Owls tie I didn’t need to read any of the court of the owls books to know what was going on. Vice versa, I could only read the Batman main series with no tie ins and get the complete Court of the Owls story.

The worst part about this the story “secret life of Eva Bell” story is actually pretty good. Once I actually read both parts and had the context of the story I actually really enjoyed it. I felt the same way about the Battle of the Atom event that spanned across 4 different X-Men books. It was a great story but just done in a batshit insane fashion. Had I not wanted to read the whole Battle of the Atom event I would have been shit out of luck for two months in whatever X-men monthly series I was reading.

Most fans might look at all this craziness and say “because comic books”. Yes Comic books be crazy but this is the exact reason that there are lot of people who would like to get into comics but find it so confusing and frustrating that they give up.

Shock-tober! Sabrina and Wytches

In honor of shock-tober, the spookiest of months, we are going to talk about two brand new horror comics.  Horror isn’t really my thing.  I’ll see a scary movie from time to time but its really not my go to genre in film, books, comics, or TV.  So I didn’t really plan on picking up any horror books in this holiest of the horror months but two books happen to come out the same day that I couldn’t resist picking up.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1

So this is not something I was planning on picking up.  I had slightly heard that they were doing a adult / teen oriented version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch but I had largely forgotten about it.  It was only recently that I even realized that Sabrina was actually part of the Archie universe.  I like to think I know some stuff about comic books but Archie is an entire corner of that world that I am blissfully unaware of.  I see it on occasion at the grocery store and it looks like the typical “American (fever) Dream” of the Leave it to Beaver 50’s.  I’ve seen these books from as far back as I can remember and have pretty much all ways looked the same back since I was a little kid and I assume that they even look pretty much the same as they did in the 50’s.  Now I do read about comic book news so I am aware enough to know that things have changed in Riverdale with the times.  There was the introduction of a gay character which lead to a gay wedding and there has even been a death of Archie issue recently.  I also remember recently the buzz around the release of Afterlife with Archie that centered around the cast of Archie being killed by zombies.

I managed to get the first issue for free in some deal on Comixology and it was actually a lot better than I expected.  I don’t honestly know what I even expected but I do know it was better than that.  The series was a (I’m going to say surprise) hit which I assume lead to the release of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

When I think of Sabrina the Teenage Witch what comes to my mind is two things, Melissa Joan Heart and a terrible looking animatronic cat.  It wasn’t until I read After Life with Archie and found Sabrina using Necronomicon.

With this new badass Sabrina in mind, when saw a Sabrina horror comic on the shelves I decided what the hell and picked it up.  The first thing about this book is the art is really great.  It has a shaded water color style sort of like what American Vampire’s Rafael Alburquerque or Lil Gotham’s Dustin Nguyen does.

Story wise I was also pretty impressed with this book.  We get a sense of things to come but largely this is a origin story tale of Sabrina and it manages to break down from her birth to teenage witch years without it getting too annoying.  I again don’t know much about Sabrina but at least from the TV show I know she lives with her aunts and they manage to explain that into this story.  It also stays in the 50’s and 60’s as far as time goes which could be hookey but works well in this book.  She still has her talking cat Salem and we meet her Cousin Ambrose.  The story is mostly set up but it ends with a creepy naked woman in the woods which looks like its the first clue to the main story.  Overall I liked the book a lot more than I thought I would.  It seemed like this is a cash grab for the new audience they found in Afterlife With Archie but they don’t phone this in, the art and story are great and I’ll probably add this to my pull list.  There is also a small introductory back up story that introduces Sabrina and some concept art which were nice.  This is my first Archie comics book I’ve bought but like Image Comics there are no ads.  The book also comes in at 43 pages which for a 3.99 book actually makes the 3.99 price a lot more bearable.

I’ve had this book on my pre-order list for a while now and have been pretty eagerly anticipating it.  This book is written by Scott Snyder and has artwork done by Jock.  Scott Snyder if you don’t all ready know is the Golden Goose of DC Comics right now.  He (with Greg Capullo on art) has been writing the flagship Batman title since the launch of the New 52 and has absolutely been killing it.  He also created American Vampire and has been writing Superman Unchained, The Wake, and Swamp Thing as well.  So far every thing I’ve read from him has been fantastic so any new book he has out I am going to give a try.  This book is mostly set up from what I can tell.  We don’t get a ton of information, its mostly groundwork which you expect from an issue one.  There is a pretty messed up scene right in the opening pages which give you an idea of the messed up places we are going to go in this book.

The art is by Jock and is really fantastic.  It also is this watercolors style that becomes more and less exaggerated based on the tone.  It started off in a frantic scene so the colors bleed a lot into each other but then when it goes into the exposition section its more subtle and the art is clearer.  We are introduced to our main character who is a young witch and during a extreme situation with a bully seems to unlock some of her powers.  She doesn’t understand what happened and her father is keeping quiet but he clearly knows whats going on.  The book ends with some creepy stuff going on and a cliffhanger ending.  I don’t really know whats going on but am pretty excited to see where it goes.
